Mariana Duarte is filmmaker and PhD researcher based in Scotland. A Berlinale Talents alumna, her work has been screened at international festivals including Edinburgh, Aspen, Curta Kinoforum, Tiradentes, and Rio de Janeiro Int'l Film Festival. She directed Newcomers (2013), and her latest short, Headland, won the Best Mini-doc Award at the 2025 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Previously a video editor at TV Globo for over seven years, Mariana graduated from the Kino Eyes Erasmus Film Masters. She is currently a PhD candidate in Film at Edinburgh College of Art, where she is also a tutor and guest lecturer in contemporary cinema. Her most recent publication, A Camera in the Water: Reframing the Migrant Image in Documentary Film, was featured in Screen Journal.
