Pelin Çılgın is a Turkish film critic, curator, creative, and scholar, currently pursuing their master's studies in Film and Television at Istanbul Bilgi University. Their film criticism has been published mainly in Turkish on the Turkish online cinema platform Bağımsız Sinema, with recent English reviews and other film articles published on Cineuropa, among others. They also program and curate films for Norway-based Fra Øst til Nord and Turkey-based Fil’m Hafızası while also serving as the head of programming for official selections for India-based SPHERE's World Cinema Carnival. In addition, they are on the selection committee for the 2022/2023 New Orleans Film Festival. Their 2020 debut live-action short film “natür & mort” has been selected for several international film festivals and one national art exhibition. In 2023, they have been revisiting the realm of filmmaking by writing/directing an animation short film (currently in production) and producing a mid-length creative documentary (currently in development/research). Their first peer-reviewed academic article, "Examining the Female Immigrant and Minority Representation in Shunji Iwai’s Swallowtail Butterfly", has been published in REFLEKTIF Journal of Social Sciences in January 2023. They have also presented at many conferences in the areas of film festivals, film curating, and film studies. Interested in foreign language learning as well, they are a polyglot in Turkish, English, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese. A recent graduate of the GoCritic! workshop, an intensive program for emerging film and animation critics organized by Cineuropa and mentored by British critic Neil Young, at Fest Anča International Animation Festival in Slovakia, they are looking forward to practicing the skills needed for a film critic further in Sarajevo as a participant of its Talent Press section. Open to work and other types of collaborations in film criticism, film curating/programming, film academia, and filmmaking. Main areas of interest include East Asian cinema with a focus on Japan and Greater China, genre films with a focus on horror, anime/animation, documentary, transmedia works, and queer feminist readings of visual media. https://www.linkedin.com/in/hpcilgin/ https://www.bagimsizsinema.com/author/h-p-cilgin https://www.youtube.com/@hpcilgin https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Pelin-Cilgin
