- 'In the Shadows' tells the story of six gold panners living deep in Costa Rica’s rainforest. For many years they have been squatting in tents, panning the rivers and exchanging their gold for food and alcohol. Now, the president is determined to permanently expel the nearly three hundred gold panners from the Osa Peninsula, the country’s crown jewel for conservation and eco-tourism. This intimate and lyrical film captures the lives of six of these modern-day pariahs as they try to survive an increasingly hostile place, and questions Costa Rica’s famed conservation practices.
