Paul Verhoeven knows that entertainment value is nothing to be scoffed at, having pushed boundaries in the 80s and 90s with films like Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct and Starship Troopers. Talking about his work and the importance of humour, suspense, a poignant story, talented actors, an extraordinary aesthetic, he will elaborate on the need for filmmakers to recognize and follow their instincts.

Matthijs Wouter Knol

Matthijs Wouter Knol is the CEO and director of the European Film Academy since 2021. Previously, he was an award-winning documentary producer. After a short stint at IDFA, he worked for the Berlinale as the Berlinale Talents programme manager (2008-2014) and director of the European Film Market (2014-2020). Among his key missions at the European Film Academy are supporting, connecting and uniting the best people and work in European cinema.

Paul Verhoeven

After studying mathematics and physics, Paul Verhoeven turned to filmmaking in the mid-1960s. His erotic thriller TURKISH DELIGHT (1973) was a big hit in the Netherlands and garnered an Academy Awards nomination, while SOLDIER OF ORANGE (1977) was nominated for a Golden Globe. Moving to Hollywood, he made ROBOCOP (1987), TOTAL RECALL (1990), BASIC INSTINCT (1992), which was nominated for two Academy Awards, STARSHIP TROOPERS (1997) and HOLLOW MAN (2000). He then returned to the Netherlands to film BLACK BOOK (2006) and to focus on writing. Most recently, his film ELLE (2016) won two Golden Globe Awards.
