That couple crossing the street in tight embrace. Those boys and girls dressed to dance. Background cast add depth to almost any scene. But if these anonymous actors hardly get any face recognition, their remuneration is often meagre too, even when their presence on set can be consequential in terms of make-up, costumes, and management. In the framework of our "Labours of Cinema" theme, this session aims to turn the spotlight onto the many uncredited workers on set. With expertise from one of Europe's biggest agencies for supporting artists and the pragmatic experience of Assistant Directors who worked on Babylon Berlin or The Grand Budapest Hotel, we learn about the inner workings and established hierarchies on location and what these mean for those extras who enhance the mood of the story or the drama of a scene.

Dennis Becker

Dennis Becker is a 2nd Assistant Director, mainly for productions of Studio Babelsberg AG. He entered the film industry as a lateral entrant by casting the extras for Wes Anderson's THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, Tom Tykwer's and Lana & Lilly Wachowski's CLOUD ATLAS, among others. After that, he passionatly worked as a crowd AD for George Clooney's MONUMENTS MEN, Francis Lawrence's HUNGER GAMES, Oliver Stone's SNOWDEN and many more. His personal highlights as 2nd AD are two films by Terrence Malick A HIDDEN LIFE and THE LAST PLANET, as well as Lana Wachowski's MATRIX RESURRECTIONS.

Sarah Dickinson

Sarah is a recognised leader of background casting. A founding member and director of leading UK film extras agency – Casting Collective – Sarah's work is notable since 1999. Her credits include the HARRY POTTER franchise, BLACK WIDOW, and the upcoming GAME OF THRONES prequel.
