Not short on talent! This programme features a hand-picked selection of short films screened in the festival and made with the involvement of Talents alumni. Berlinale Shorts is known for premiering bold approaches to the short form. Generation features a strong lineup for audiences of all ages, and Forum Expanded experiments with and expands the very concept of cinematic art forms. Don't miss these films which are competing for Golden and Crystal Bears and the extended Q&A with the filmmakers following the screening.

Maris Curran

Maris Curran’s films have shown at the Berlinale, Toronto, Sheffield Doc/Fest and MoMA, among others. Her debut narrative feature, FIVE NIGHTS IN MAINE, starring David Oyelowo and Rosie Perez, was released in 2016. She recently completed two short documentaries, WHILE I YET LIVE, about five quilters and freedom fighters from Alabama, and THE MAN IS THE MUSIC, about the artist and musician Lonnie Holley. She holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program and was a Fulbright Fellow.

Alex Gerbaulet

Alex Gerbaulet is a Berlin-based artist, filmmaker and curator. Her film SCHICHT (2015) was developed at the Berlinale Talents Doc Station in 2011 and received multiple international awards. She has taught at art schools in Braunschweig and Kassel, and has worked as a writer and producer at Pong Film in Berlin since 2014. Her film DIE SCHLÄFERIN is showing in this year’s Forum Expanded section.

Lucile Hadžihalilović

Lucile Hadžihalilović studied art history before graduating from La Fémis in Paris. Her debut mini-feature LA BOUCHE DE JEAN-PIERRE premiered at Un Certain Regard in Cannes in 1996. INNOCENCE won Best Film in San Sebastián in 2004. Her latest film EVOLUTION picked up the Special Jury Prize in San Sebastián in 2015. Both films were sold and released worldwide. Additionally, she has directed a few short films: GOOD BOYS (1998), NECTAR (2014) and DE NATURA (2017).

Vergine Keaton

Born in Lyon, Vergine Keaton studied graphic arts and cinema. In 2007, she directed her first animation short film JE CRIAIS CONTRE LA VIE. OU POUR ELLE. The film was selected for hundreds of festivals, including Cannes (ACID Official Selection), and received numerous awards. Her second film MARZEVAN was shown at Les Sommets du Cinéma d’Animation, Belo Horizonte, Animanima and Riverside.

Mariam Mekiwi

Mariam Mekiwi is a filmmaker and film editor born in Alexandria, Egypt, and based in Hamburg.

Florian Weghorn

Florian Weghorn is the Programme Manager of Berlinale Talents. Together with Nikola Joetze, he heads the initiative and advises its seven international branches and the alumni network around the globe. He holds an MA in Theatre, Film and Television Studies from the University of Cologne. Florian joined Berlinale Generation in 2002 and served as the co-director and curator of the programme from 2008 to 2014. Between 2012 and 2019, Florian was also a member of the Berlinale Competition Selection Committee. He has written and edited several publications on film and youth culture.
