One of several films screening in Berlinale Forum and made by Talent alumni,MAR is directed, produced and written by Dominga Sotomayor (Berlinale Talents 2009), in collaboration with writer/producer/actor Lisandro Rodríguez (2014), writer Manuela Martelli (2005) and editor Catalina Marín Duarte (2013). On Sunday, Sotomayor and former Editing Studio participant Duarte will also join the Studio to conduct a case study of the film’s editing and dramaturgical structure. Marcelo Martinessi (2013/2014) returns to Berlinale NATIVe this year with his short film MAN OF THE NORTH.
Marcelo Martinessi
Marcelo Martinessi is a Paraguayan director and screenwriter who studied cinema at the London Film School. His short films revolving around literature and memory have been shown at the Berlinale and other festivals. He was the director of Paraguay’s first public television, from the beginning of the project until the 2012 coup d’état. Capturing his nation’s trauma during that political chaos, he made LA VOZ PERDIDA, which won Best Short Film at the Venice Film Festival in 2016.
Catalina Marín Duarte
Catalina Marín Duarte is the editor of Dominga Sotomayor's award-winning features THURSDAY TILL SUNDAY, MAR and TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG, among other projects. She recently edited Omar Zuñiga’s first feature THE STRONG ONES as well as the artist Alejandra Prieto's film projects. Over the last four years, together with Dominga Sotomayor and Rafela Behrens, she has developed the arthouse cinema Cine CCC, conceived as a meeting point for Chilean cinema and its surrounding community.
Dominga Sotomayor
Chilean writer, director and producer. After founding the production company Cinestación in 2008, she directed the short films NOVEMBER, BELOW, THE MOUNTAIN and VIDEOGAME, before co-directing her feature debut THE ISLAND in 2013, which won several international awards. In 2014, she directed MAR, which was shown at Berlinale Forum. Dominga is also one of the founders of the CCC, Centro de Cine y Creación, a new arthouse cinema and centre in Santiago de Chile.

Florian Weghorn
Florian Weghorn is the Programme Manager of Berlinale Talents. Together with Nikola Joetze, he heads the initiative and advises its seven international branches and the alumni network around the globe. He holds an MA in Theatre, Film and Television Studies from the University of Cologne. Florian joined Berlinale Generation in 2002 and served as the co-director and curator of the programme from 2008 to 2014. Between 2012 and 2019, Florian was also a member of the Berlinale Competition Selection Committee. He has written and edited several publications on film and youth culture.
