Technically a Woman: Cinematographers Speak Out

Cinematography is more than tech and testosterone, and it often takes a woman with serious guts to wade her way through that little boys’ club. “I’ve been called a woman cameraman,“ says American DoP Nancy Schreiber (Your Friends and Neighbors). Internationally recognised and lauded, she spent a lifetime working for more than 100 films and is the fourth woman voted into the American Society of Cinematographers and the first female DoP ever to receive its President’s Award in 2017. Joining Schreiber onstage for an open exchange with the audience is likewise legendary Agnès Godard, who has lensed films for Agnès Varda and Claire Denis and won the César Award for her work on Beau Travail. Comparing perspectives from both sides of the Atlantic, Schreiber and Godard discuss their methods of collaborating on set, the possibilities opened up by new technologies, their visions for the industry future, how to keep the focus and change the picture for women in film.
Agnès Godard
Agnès Godard is a director of photography and a graduate of the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinématographiques Paris. She has collaborated with Claire Denis, Agnès Varda, Wim Wenders, Peter Greenaway, André Téchiné, and many others. Her distinctions include winning a César for Best Photography, being named Best Cinematographer by the National Society of Film Critics, and receiving the Chlotrudis Award 2010, the Special Prize CST 2009 and the Marburger Kamerapreis 2012 for her body of work.
Nancy Schreiber
Nancy Schreiber, ASC is an American cinematographer with an eclectic list of film, television, music video, and documentary credits. Her work earned two Best Cinematography awards at Sundance, a Golden Frog nomination, and Emmy and Independent Spirit Award nominations. She made Variety’s “10 Cinematographers to Watch” list and was presented with a Crystal Award from Women In Film. She was the first woman to receive the President’s Award from the American Society of Cinematographers and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Vinca Wiedemann
Vinca Wiedemann is the director of the National Film School of Denmark and a former film editor, script writer, producer and story supervisor. She worked with Lars von Trier on his screenplay for MELANCHOLIA and NYMPHOMANIAC and as a creative producer on Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winning IN A BETTER WORLD. She has held several positions at the Danish Film Institute and was the co-founder and first artistic director of New Danish Screen, a production support programme for talent development.
