Metrobranding - The Creation and Production of City Images

There's a whole lot of business behind the decision of a film's location: the new world order demands that all major cities create an image which is easily distinguishable from its competitors. The branding of nations and cities has become a major by-product of filmmaking with far reaching influences from the contemporary film industry. Thus, what are the consequences for filmmaking in various parts of the world? Directors from three continents - Tata Amaral (Brazil), Wim Wenders (Germany) and Ning Ying (China) - who have created character-like images of their cities São Paulo, Berlin and Beijing in their films, and urbanist Deyan Sudjic will discuss city branding.

Tata Amaral

Brazilian director of TV programmes, short films and videos, her debut feature was A STARRY SKY, followed by THROUGH THE WINDOW. Her film ANTONIA opened the K14 competition of the Berlinale in the section Generation in 2007.

Vinzenz Hediger

Film critic for a major Swiss newspaper during the 90s, he is presently a professor of film and media studies at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. Until end 2004, he was on the board of trustees of the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia, responsible for visual arts and the cinema.

Deyan Sudjik

Director at Design Museum, London, he is also an architecture critic for The Guardian. He works on "The Changing World: Making Cities Work, a radio series produced" by the BBC World Service. He is active with the Alfred Herrhausen Gesellschaft.

Ning Ying

China's premier woman director, she is also a screenwriter, producer, editor and cinematographer, thus donning numerous caps. Her films include WU QIONG DONG, RAILROAD OF HOPE and I LOVE BEIJING. She was a member of the Berlinale Short Film Jury in 2007.
