Youssef Shazli, Verena von Stackelberg, Agnès Salson, Anthony Killick
Since the digital revolution, the doomsday prophecies of the death of the local cinema have proven largely unfounded. On the contrary, many innovative screening spaces are cropping up across regions worldwide. This trend is evidence that going to cinema is about more than watching films. As part of the highly popular “Berlinale Goes Kiez” initiative, this session takes place in the brand new w o l f in Berlin Neukölln. The “wolf-gang” and other creators of exciting community cinemas in Germany, the UK and Egypt present their projects and address practical concerns such as financing, curatorship, social engagement and architecture.
Born and raised in Cairo, Youssef Shazli studied International Development at McGill University and joined Misr International Films (MIF) and its initiative, the Panorama of the European Film, currently in its ninth run. In 2014, he launched Zawya Cinema, one of Egypt's first arthouse cinemas, and most recently Zawya Distribution, an initiative to promote Egyptian arthouse films locally and abroad.
Verena von Stackelberg
Verena von Stackelberg is the founder and managing director of the independent cinema Wolf Kino in Berlin. She has worked in film exhibition, distribution and festivals, including at Curzon Cinemas, Filmgalerie 451, the Cambridge Film Festival and the Berlinale. When she decided to create Wolf, her dream was to build a place with an emphasis on critical exchange between filmmakers and film lovers, and between the neighbourhood and the wider international film community.
Anthony Killick is a PhD researcher looking at film festivals, urban development and social movements at Edge Hill University in Northern England. He is also a filmmaker, a co-director of the Liverpool Radical Film Festival and a co-founder and programmer at the Liverpool Small Cinema.
Agnès Salson is a cinema exhibition graduate from the French film school La Fémis (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Métiers de l’Image et du Son). In 2014, she toured the cinemas of France with her partner Mikael Arnal and recorded their findings in the book “Dream the Cinemas, Tomorrow.” In 2015, they hit the road again to visit cinemas all over Europe and to gather the most innovative ideas in cinema exhibition today.
